Several members of the NASA Harvest Consortium, NASA’s agriculture and food security program, will be traveling to Bonn, Germany to present research at the European Space Agency’s 2022 Living Planet Symposium.
Hosted by ESA, the Symposium provides a platform for thousands of scientists from around the world to share their research using Earth observation data to increase understanding of the planet. Earth observation data has revolutionized scientific research, allowing scientists to perform analyses at global scales, in inaccessible locations, and over multi-decade time periods. As climate change increasingly impacts environments, nations, and people around the world, Earth observation data is helping scientists and policymakers forecast, react, and adjust to the changes. In addition, while Earth observation data was traditionally provided by governments, it has increasingly been collected by private companies which also are developing new methods of cloud-based analysis - providing increased opportunities for public private partnerships. Attendees at Living Planet Symposium are able to explore recent advances in Earth observation platforms, analysis methodologies, and research applications.
Harvest utilizes Earth observation data to monitor global agricultural growing conditions, create yield estimates, provide commodity market transparency, and help policymakers respond to humanitarian disasters. Harvest will be well-represented at the Symposium, with consortium members: co-convening 5 sessions; giving 16 oral presentations; and serving as co-authors on dozens of submitted papers. Our team looks forward to presenting our work, learning from our colleagues, and fostering additional collaborations!
