Our mission is to enable and advance adoption of satellite Earth observations by public and private organizations to benefit food security, agriculture, market stability, and human and environmental resiliency worldwide.
NASA Harvest's goal is to broaden the use of Earth observations (EO) for assessing food security, decreasing market volatility, and monitoring crop productivity across the globe — driven by user-identified needs.
Commissioned by NASA in 2017, Harvest is a global multidisciplinary consortium of agriculture and remote sensing experts working with farmers, agribusinesses, economists, humanitarian organizations, governments, technology developers, and decision makers to deliver critical agriculture assessments.
Harvest operates via grant funding, primarily supported by NASA's Applied Sciences Agriculture Program Area (#80NSSC23M0032). The consortium’s administrative and management hub is based at the University of Maryland’s Department of Geographical Sciences.
Given the exceptionally high demand for EO-derived agriculture information, consortium partnerships are customized to most efficiently leverage available resources. Common partnership structures to support new projects include seeking joint funding, co-hiring, and in-kind exchanges.
All of our work is driven by user needs. We co-develop Harvest projects through strong international partnerships ranging from agricultural industry to the food security early warning community, from global trade organizations to the major national, regional, and global policy frameworks.
